The Truth About: Hair Rebonding

Yesterday my hair underwent rebonding for the first time; like a jittery virgin, I allowed my glory to be plundered and...Whoops off-tangent there hahaha :p Oh well last night was the KKK dinner so my buddies suggested I go for hair rebonding (temporary)...Apparently my hair is too wavy & unruly for a dinner party haha...

To have hair like Fann Wong's...or no?
The process
The curls that some of us detest comes from natural chemical bonds. In rebonding, these bonds are broken & rebonded to give that silky straight texture.
  • Hair is washed with mild shampoo (no conditioner) & dried completely.
  • Perming lotion is added to soften the hair (break the chemical bonds) & is washed off.
  • The hair is then heated between 2 metal plates which straightens the hair. Here the chemical bonds are connected again.
The effects
You may choose to have temporary or permanent rebonding; the latter will require maintenance to make sure the new hair that grows will be straight too.

Worry me not...
The concern is with the chemicals used for the process.
Quote:
Chemicals used are sodium hydroxide, guanidine hydroxide. ammonium thioglycolate.

Sodium hydroxide is a caustic chemical that can burn the skin, and break or damage hair. The stronger the solution used (for better effects), the more potential damage can occur to the hair.

Guanidine hydroxide is less damaging than sodium hydroxide, but it may still damage hair and it can definitely de-fat the scalp. The treatment can cost up to over US $ 500, and lasts only 4-6 months.

Ammonium Thioglycolate is a known cause of irritant contact dermatitis in hairdressers and their clients.

The effects of this process includes hair loss, baldness, dry hair, split ends etc...

So...
If you decide to rebond your hair, make sure that the hairdresser is experienced & the chemicals used aren't very harmful. Be sure that you're ready to commit to having silky smooth hair. I know I wasn't dedicated: I washed it the next day. I'm no expert on the matter, I'm sure there are better experts out there hehe...Au Naturel all the way!

Rebonding is the process of restructuring the structure of natural hair.If you have curly or wavy hair, this is the fantastic choice of all. If you do rebonding do remember to have frequent hair treatment to avoid hair breaking, bald or bad fall off. :)
