Pan Mee at Jln Besar Gambang
This is one of the best places to go for pan mee. Heck, make it THE BEST. From UMP, drive to the cross junction (with traffic lights) & turn right to enter Jalan Besar Gambang. Drive on & you'll see many old-town Chinese shoplots. Once you've passed the BHP petrol station, keep an eye out for an automotive workshop. After 7pm, the adjacent lot would be selling pan mee until around 11pm. The owner is a pretty young woman; she told us that the stall had been there for about 10 yrs. Very impressive.
Pan Mee
The noodles are fresh & hand made from kneaded flour. You may ask for the noodles to be "torn" into flat pieces or wound through a cutter to make fine noodles. No complains there :p
The fried anchovies is a must & its very crunchy. Not too oily, yet not too dry. The soup is slightly cloudy & has vegetables, meat (you may ask for pork/chicken), meatballs (again, either fish/pork) sprinkled with fried onion shallots.
There are 4 sizes, priced at RM2.50, RM3, Rm3.50 & RM4. Really affordable, trust me. Plus its extra delicious.
Tong Sui
Another specialty of this stall is tong sui (Chinese dessert). There are 4 types: green bean (lv dou tang), red bean (hong dou tang), barley with egg (foo chuk yi mai), & ubi (fan shu tang). They serve different tong sui every night & for RM1 per bowl, its a lovely finish to a delicious meal.
Other dishes & drinks
You may opt to try out other dishes. The stall doesn't sell rice dishes but they do offer noodle dishes like yin yong, hokkien noodles, mun yee meen, etc. These dishes are no less delicious than the pan mee & they are priced at RM3.80 (regular) & RM4.50 (big).
They also sell shui jiao, a bigger version of wan tan dumplings. You can order them in soup or fried (min 5 pieces), each piece is 60 cents. I've only tried the fried ones; I find them pleasantly free from that charred/burned taste & is tasty.
They also sell leong sui (herbal tea) which varies every night along with leong fun, & other dishes.
Conclusion
This is one of the pros of staying in Gambang. It certainly doesn't have that chemical preservative taste that's so abundant in KL pan mee. This is something I will miss when I leave UMP :)
