Happy Mother's Day!

I admit that I was quite busy today so I didn't have time to write this post earlier, but better late than never, right? :)

How did Mother's Day came to be?
It was created by Anna Jarvis to honor the mother & was originally a US celebration. Malaysia celebrates it on the 2nd Sunday of May.

Celebration or Manipulation?
As is the common argument around Valentine's Day, has Mother's Day, too, become another excuse for spending money for silly thrills? Has it become a mere gimmick of commercialization? According to IBISWorld, Americans (alone!) spend $2.6billion on flowers, $1.53billion on gifts & $68million for greeting cards! What was supposed to be a celebration to honor our mothers became a machine generating billions of dollars worth of cards, commercials, gifts, flowers etc!

Money, money, money...but where's the love?

How to avoid THAT trap?
Be genuine. Celebrate the true purpose of Mother's Day. Here are some tips about what you can do to make it special for that special woman:

1. Get creative! use your imagination, go green with your materials to make her a special card! There are many tricks & tips you can use to make it more decorative & eye-catching! Make sure the message of the card is exactly what your heart wants to tell her!

2. Kitchen time... if you're not adept in the kitchen, practice before Mother's Day! Find out her favorite dishes & get working! Whether it is preparing all her meals for this special day or making her favorite cookies, it's worth the smile & the happiness you'll be giving her! Plus you sharpen your cooking skills & get some of the leftovers!

3. Music, on! Get a blank CD, make a list of your mom's favorite songs & burn them in for her! Now she'll get her own personalized CD with the songs she can groove to, whether she's cooking or driving! It's a simple & cheap gift to make & you get to select the songs for her :)

4. Arty fun! There are various books & websites that offer lessons on making special gifts for Mom! Weave a basket, cross stitch a portrait, make bead jewelery or clay pottery! All it takes is a desire to learn & an eye to add in features/details that Mom would love! Give her the personal touch on a simple handicraft!

There are many ways to make Mother's Day special for your mom, you need to know what makes your mom tick & work that to the best advantage!

Happy Mother's Day to all the mummies in the world! We wouldn't be here without you! :)

Quotation: "Happy Mother's Day to all the mummies in the world! We wouldn't be here without you! :)"

I would prefer to say "Happy Mother's Day to all the mummies, future mummies (like you) and soon-to-become mummies in the world! Without mummies (women), we wouldn't be here." Which sometimes I relate the International Women's Day and Happy Mother's Day are similar, but the objectives differ.

A little bit of history. Mother's Day, created by Anna Jarvis, to honour mothers for their endless tribute and sacrifice. The practice of celebrating Mother's Day is a relatively recent tradition, first established in the U.S.A. in the early 20th century. Different countries celebrate Mother's Day on various days of the year because the day has a number of different origins. The date of Mother's Day is not specify and centralised in the whole world. It is unnecessary to follow the date proposed, as a son/daughter, we could self-proclaim that everyday is Mother's Day. Appreciation is done willingly not waiting till a special day to express its gratitude.

Anyhow, Happy Mother's Day to all, and to you too, Rowie (for a future becoming mother). =)
